La Dolce Vita

Fellini’s masterpiece opens with a helicopter flying through the air carrying a statue of Jesus.  No subtle symbolism.  Religion in the modern age = celebrity worship.

In La Dolce Vita: Twentieth-Century Man?, Bernard Knieger writes that “the view of man suggested by La dolce vita itself and by its exploitation is that modern man is degenerate as demonstrated by his sensation-seeking.” He adds that Marcello and his pleasure-loving friends “enjoy the decadent atmosphere for what it offers them; they even enjoy seeing suffering and making others suffer.” There are too many distractions and temptations that real communication and real human relationships can’t exist. Knieger further attributes man’s degeneracy to the failure of Christianity. “What is here dramatized is man’s alienation from God and consequently from his fellow man [and] is man as the living dead inhabiting a Waste Land.” Christianity was unable to successfully adapt to the modern world and instead became something to sensationalize – as portrayed in the sequence with the children and Madonna – rather than something that would give modern man a moral direction. For Knieger, the monstrous fish found on the beach at the end of the film also takes on a biblical meaning, meant to imply that Christianity is dead. (Lena Kim).

Lockdown Armageddon *

And do those feet in present times
Walk upon Wales’s mountains green,
And does our holy man of God
Appear on Wales’s daily TV screen.

It is a vision so divine
That shines upon our clouded hills,
As Armageddon brings decline
With no more money to pay our bills.

Bring me my pen of burning gold,
Bring me a heart that’s still on fire:
I have no fear, won’t be controlled,
Here in my Chariot of Desire …

I will not cease from mental fight,
I’ll keep on writing day and night,
Till I have freed our Principality
From FM’s Lockdown Mentality!

* with apologies to the incomparable William Blake –
I think he would approve today.

ENDORSEMENT

The Case Against Donald Trump – The president of the United States poses a threat to our collective existence. The choice voters face is spectacularly obvious.

Donald Trump is the worst president this country has seen since Andrew Johnson, or perhaps James Buchanan, or perhaps ever. Trump has brought our country low; he has divided our people; he has pitted race against race; he has corrupted our democracy; he has shown contempt for American ideals; he has made cruelty a sacrament; he has provided comfort to propagators of hate; he has abandoned America’s allies; he has aligned himself with dictators; he has encouraged terrorism and mob violence; he has undermined the agencies and departments of government; he has despoiled the environment; he has opposed free speech; he has lied frenetically and evangelized for conspiracism; he has stolen children from their parents; he has made himself an advocate of a hostile foreign power; and he has failed to protect America from a ravaging virus. Trump is not responsible for all of the 220,000 COVID-19-related deaths in America. But through his avarice and ignorance and negligence and titanic incompetence, he has allowed tens of thousands of Americans to suffer and die, many alone, all needlessly. With each passing day, his presidency reaps more death.
TIMES 24 October 2020 – Peter Brookes
Donald Trump, however, is a clear and continuing danger to the United States, and it does not seem likely that our country would be able to emerge whole from four more years of his misrule. Two men are running for president. One is a terrible man; the other is a decent man. Vote for the decent man.

La Revolution

Just finished the mini-series on Netflix. Generally not into the 're-imagined' genre but enjoyed this one. A good cast. Not too over the top with the 'supernatural' element and the core idea of a disease among the aristocracy worked well as a parable for many things ... capitalism 'eating' the poor etc.
I wonder if they are marching towards a second series?

Here. I am waiting …

Here. I am waiting.
Even if the lights go out, even if someone
says to me: ‘No more’ - even if emptiness
reaches me as a grey draught of air from the stage,
even if none of my silent forefathers
sits by me anymore, not one woman,
not even the boy with the brown, squinting, eyes.
I’ll still be here. One can always watch.
