We swim in a fiery element …

Set outside ourselves, we swim in an enigmatic, fiery element, no longer knowing ourselves nor recognizing the most familiar of things; we no longer possess any standard of measurement, everything law-like and rigid begins to shift, everything gleams in new colours, speaks to us in new signs and characters. (Nietzsche in his 'Untimely Meditations' 4:7. 1873-76).
Both the shaman and Nietzsche reject the established truths conjured up by established cultures from the safety of terra firma. They adhere to the importance of the authentic moments that disrupt the logic of the same.
